The story took place after the Chinese Culture Revolution. The Communist Party completely takes control of new China after 1949. Communist Party claimed that all Chinese people have equal right. But reality did not look so good during that age.
Mr. Chiu is Chinese male who is a professor in Harbin University. He is Communist Party member. He visited Muji city with his girl friend for honeymoon. During their lunch, Chiu disputed with a policeman because the policeman dumped tea on his feet.
Finally, the policeman arrested Chiu and put him to the prison which is obviously an abuse of power.
He asked his girl friend to find someone to get him if he cannot return by tomorrow. During the time in prison, Chiu refused to acknowledge his “guilt”, and he clarified that he is innocent. His acute hepatitis finally relapsed. He determined to expose the dark side of jail and policeman.
When Chiu saw his student Fenjin was in jail, he understood that after Fenjin got the message from his girl friend, he came to jail to save him. However, the result was just the opposite of their wish. Fenjin was putted into jail as well. In order to get release of Fenjin and himself, he signed the statement of “crime”.
When they got released, Mr. Chiu and Fenjin ate at many restaurants which near by the jail. Chiu never finished his food, and he kept eating at another one. He always left some food at bowls because he wanted to kill all of those people. Within a month, there were over right hundred people contracted acute hepatitis. Also, six people died including 2 children.
However, when I finished reading this story, my first impression toward Chiu is that he is a victim. Later, I felt that he is actually a saboteur and extremist. The real victims are those who died in acute hepatitis. He infected his acute hepatitis to a lot of people and cause many people died including two children. How come a well educated professor became to a shameless saboteur. I think the main reason is because his foundation in his believes of Communist Party standard was destroyed. It was just destroyed by Communist Party member (those policemen).
After the fall of Shah, all the political prisoners were liberated. Marjane’s parents met their two old friends Siamak Jari and Mohsen Shakiba. When they went to Marjane’s home, Marjane’ parents were very surprised because they thought Siamak Jari and Mohsen Shakuba were already dead in prison. Her parents were shocked when these two old friends told what happened during the time they were in prison. All prison suffered from torture, and many prisoners got killed. When Marjane listened their experience of suffering torture, she had an impression toward torture, and she tried to experience with her friends. But the novelty of torture went off quickly.
everyone have theri own defination of hero. In Marjane’s mind, she believes that those who have participated in the revolutionary and have been in prison are heroes. Because Marjane’s father has never been to the prison, so she thinks that her father is not a hero, and she is disappointed. But she made a faked story and lied to her friends in order to feel better. When Marjane met his uncle Annosh, his uncle told her his “great experience”. Since then, Marjane regarded his uncle as a real hero. His uncle also told her about his experience about going to USSR and his failed marriage. His Failed marriage with the Russian woman was the most painful memory which deeply etched in his mind. Also, Marjane is very proud of his uncle Annosh and his grandpa who had been in prison.
I think I understood why Marjane wanted to experience torture. Like Marjane, I also have similar experience to her. When I was young, my curiosity pushes me to explore everything in the world around me. Something was worthwhile, but some not. At ages five, my friends and I did something stupid which similar to torture. For example, the most funny thing I still remember today is that while we play finger-guessing game, the loser would eat carpenter worm or locust as the punishment. But I I never eat it. Even though I did a lot of crazy things in my young age, it is still a wonderful memory to me. Hahaha…
When Marjane asked her grandmother about her grandpa, her grandmother actually did not want to talk about it and tried to change topic. But Marjane is a smart girl, and she knew that it was very hard for her grandmother to tell the truth. Finally, her grandmother told her what happened before. They had a very struggling time to live because Shah’s father took everything they owned. Since then, they had no money to buy food, and she had to pretend to cook because she did not want neighbor to know anything. Since she knew her grandpa was actually killed by the Shah’s father, she hates the government and she wants to become a revolutionist.
The maid felled in love with a neighbor young man. Marjane’s maid pretended to be her sister, so she would be in the higher social class just like Marjane’s family. They conveyed their love in letters. Because of maid’s sister’s jealousy, they rumors finally spread to Marjane’s father. Then, her father informed the young men that the girl felled in love with him was actually his maid, but not his daughter. The young men cut the relationship with the maid, it and caused her very sad and disappointed. At that time, Marjane understood that what different social classes are.
The case of the maid felled in love with the young men makes me a little confuse. The letter in this case refer to the different social class. I thought it was a true love between these two people, but why they eventually broke up? Is it just because of the different social class or because of the lie that the maid made?
Persepolis is a true story of a Childhood by Marjane Satrapi. The book is enjoyable. In black-and-white comic strip images, she tells the story of her Childhood life in Tehran from ages six to fourteen.
The story took place in Tehran of Iran. In the beginning of the story, she tells about when she was 9 years old, “The Islamic Revolution” took place. It caused a lot of thing and rules changed. For example, in the school, students have to wear the veil. All bilingual schools have been closed down because they are symbols of capitalism. At that time, she was an upper class girl. Her parents were against Shah and supported the revolution because they wanted to get freedom. So that every day and everywhere in the streets there were demonstrations and against those fallacious laws and rules such as the veil. Her parents bought a lot of books for her in order to enlighten her. Since she knew more knowledge and about what happened in the history from the books, she understood the meaning and significance of the revolution of her country. Her parents also told her about the King Shah who was actually an illiterate low ranking officer, and they explained the truth of a dirty deal between the Shah and the British.
When a leader of a country cannot take his responsibility, he must be forced to resign. The culture revolution may be caused for a lot of reasons. The culture revolution in Iran is because people were against the government in order to get their freedom and basic human rights. When compared with “The Islamic Revolution”, the Chinese Cultural Revolution in is completely different. The purpose of Cultural Revolution in China is for creating a new China and changing old views and rules. Chinese people supported government instead of against them. However, nowadays, Chinese culture revolution has been criticized. So I think some culture revolutions are very meaningful, but some cause bad results.
War is for the sake of government. Government serves for the economy. Can we understand that the purpose of war is for economy? Many people have come to believe that the U.S. attack on Iraq was not justified because it has not been found out the weapons of mass destruction. The U.S. spent about $7150 billion on Iraq war. It caused many people lost life and cost a lot of money. Moreover, it was also broken the allies’ relationship because it goes against the principles of war to attack a country that is not a threat.
As we all know, one of the main reasons the U.S claimed for the attacks on Iraq was because US requested Iraq to disarm their weapons of mass destruction that they have. It was not hard to understand preventing the terrorist attack in the future is very important. However, there are no weapons of mass destruction be found.
In addition, morally and ethically, Iraq war was wrong. It should not be acceptable in human civilization world for one country to attack another when it has not been attacked. The U.S. believes that it is right because they are helping Iraq and helping the countries which are near from being attacked. They believe that it is right as a defender which is being attack. However, the United States and nor any of its allies had been attacked by the Iraq. Therefore, The U.S. attack on Iraq would against the basic principles of going to war that most of the world has been following for years. An attack by United States on a country that has not done anything sets a bad international precedent. Was it ok to attack another country when one country just feels threatened by them? If it was acceptable, the entire world would be at war.
When study the Deng Xiaoping’s thought, it very easy to find his unique view of change. Basically, we have to know what we need to change under different circumstances. The changing include the changing of consciousness, changing of adjusting, changing of innovation. Deng Xiaoping insisted on emancipating the mind, seeking truth from facts, innovation through the history and future, and integrates theory with practice, etc.
Changing of consciousness is to observe and follow the epochal themes and international situations of great changes. Since the mid 1970s, new technology revolution and economic globalization is developing rapidly. Human society has entered a new historical period which is different from war and revolution era. After in-depth observation and analysis, Deng Xiaoping put forward that the peace and developments are the themes of new era conclusion, and he pointed out that there are the truly big problems we face. With global strategic problem, one is peace and the other is economic problems or development problem.
Changing of adjusting means to quickly adjust it position and adapts to changing circumstances. He points out that it important to know the international great change. Then, according to the change, we have to do the adjustment for our country.
Changing of innovation means to advance ideal innovation, tamp thought foundation. Deng Xiaoping’s thought is first being change with the correct idea and thinking methods of how we can change. Change is not bad. China takeover of Hong Kong is a change. So don’t generally say that change is bad and afraid of change. Don’t refuse to change because when we refused to change, we cannot progress well.
Have you ever imagined what happen if all people move to the countryside? It truly happened in Chinese history. The Cultural Revolution in China occurred from 1966 to 1976 which was a large scale political campaign launched by Mao Zedong. I have no experience Culture revolution. What I know is all based on book, news, and people’s discussions. Today, Culture Revolution has been criticized. However, I think there are still certain points we need to consider about.
1. Our development speed is slower; however, what is our foundation under that condition.
2. Western capitalist development is faster, what is their foundation?
3. Can a congenital deficiency baby run faster that a strong young adult?
Obviously, latter is faster than former in that case. At that time, the fundamental purpose is serving the masses of the people which means that take care of all people. What is the right developing development China should go under that age? Let’s think about this example. There are two factory directors, each have a factory land. The first factory directors sold the land to foreigners, immediately he got a lot of money, and use the money to produce hot product and quickly obtain good profits. Then, those foreigners use Chinese cheap resources cost and labor cost achieved great interests. But the land already belongs to foreigners.
When the factory director b get this piece of land, he spend money to create a factory, and train his workers, import new foreign talents and technology, but not import foreign finished goods. He determined to use his own people to develop products. He did not immediately get profit in a short term, but deeply in debt.
Which director would develop faster in the future?
Before liberation, China is a poor and backward country. Under this condition, China didn’t fall, but still developed. Many problems such as, food and clothing was improved. It started to develop its science and technology. Also, it created its industry, navy and air force. Therefore, we have to understand Mao’s thought correctly.
Mao Zedong is also well known as Chairman Mao. Chairman Mao is the founder of New China and he is a great man in Chinese history. He was leader of the Chinese people, Marxist, a great proletarian revolutionary, strategist, poet, calligrapher, theorist, and the Communist Party of China. His dramatic personal life, his military talent, his artist poems, his political skill in his years have influenced generations of people.
When you want to fully understand the history of China, it is very important to know the father of the People’s Republic of China. Mao Zedong was born in a peasant family in Shaoshan, Xiangtan, Hunan Province. On September 9, 1976, he died in Beijing at the age of 83. He was the head of the Chinese Communist Party for forty-one years since the historic ZhunYi meeting (1935) during the Long March. He built the Red Army which referred to the People’s Liberation Army today. It took part in the anti-Japanese War and the civil war in China and finally chased the Guo Ming Dang to Taiwan and established the People’s Republic of China. He was one of most influential people in the modern China history. Mao’s though affected people during that age. The little red book which is a collection of quotations excerpted from Mao Zedong’s past speeches and publications affect people’s thought during the culture revolution. During the Cultural Revolution, studying the book was not only required in schools but was also a standard practice in the workplace as well. It was the most visible icon in mainland China and appeared in a lot of places, even in the marriage certificate. Almost All Chinese people could memorize the content of the little red book, and it was the book which influenced people’s thought most during the culture revolution.
On October 30th, we went to the Happy Hollow Park & Zoo to join the volunteer. In that cloudy sky, I drove to the park from Newark city. On the Saturday, it was easy to drive on the freeway because there were not too many cars. After about 30 minutes, I arrived to the Happy Hollow Park & Zoo. It was located in San Jose. The security guard was really helpful and kind, he gave me free parking and told where the office I should go. I went to the office and told the staff that I was the volunteer. When all of us filled out the application, the stuff spoke to us and led us into the park. At first, we watched an acrobatics which performed by four people. It was really amazing and expressive because it was the first time that I stand in front of the stage and watch acrobatics. During the show, everyone stared the acrobats in great wonder. It attracted everyone’s eyes and attentions. For example, all the people held their breath when an acrobat standing on the other’s head. We were tense when one juggled 6 small balls. After the show, we went to the garden. There were a lot of pumpkins and scarecrow. The staff told us that the garden was the place that we help kids to do the scarecrow and pumpkins. And also, he taught us how to do those things. It was really interesting to help those kids. Some of them were willing to get help from us and some of them were very independent on doing their own work. They were very concentrated to draw the pictures and cut the pumpkins. Moreover, those kids did a lot of scarecrows with their parents. Xiao and I did one too. All of us did great job, and we had a lot of fun. At the end, it started to rain, and we finished the volunteer day.
